Clemens Kogler: PHONOVIDEO
Stuck In A Groove
A film by Clemens Kogler
“Stuck In A Groove” is a film which is produced with a very unique selfdeveloped technique called “phonovideo” which allows to create films in an analog way. In a process similar to dj creating and mixing their music with records players. Phonovideo uses a similar setup to display and mix animations. All animation is created by putting special discs on turntables by hand and operating a videomixer.
Analog to the technique the film plays around with the topic of loops since its a limitation of the device that it can only produce 2 second loops. The narration is derived from the opening words of the book “The unbearable lightness of being” by Milan Kundera were the philosophical concept of eternal recurrence as introduced by Friedrich Nietzsche is discussed. It deals with the question of “Which is the perfect moment that is so fulfilling that it could last forever” or in a broader context which direction I should reach out for in live. Where is the point were my desires are fulfilled - in an ironic pop cultural way of dealing with that question.
As a logical consequence all of the differenct scenes of the movie are based on famous and not so famous record covers of the last five decades. Not only to give another hint to the analog and anachronistic way of producing the film and using the fantastic imagery of a now more or less dying artform but also isn’t that pop culture is all about. Finding a way to communicate and discuss philosophies and ideologies in short loops.
Phonovideo is a homemade visual tool that allows to display and mix short animations in an analog way without computers etc. It’s a mixture of the phenakistoscope technique from 1832 and turntablism. The basic setup is two turntables, two cameras, a videomixer, some output or recording device and pile of “records” with printed-on animations. You can think of it as an video equivalent to a classic dj-setup.
In the future this installment will be used not only to produce film but also or live performances and visuals.
